Beschreibung

Cemetery Records There are no cemetery records located at the Amherst Town Hall. The road department keeps the records at the Amherst Road Department Office on Dodge Road. The records for Cricket Corner Cemetery begin in 1934, before that none can be found. There is a plot map of the cemetery and an index card file of the plots. Numbers have been assigned to each plot. The individual plot index cards were purchased, a pre-printed format. At a minimum they contain the plot number and the owner's name. In fact, most of the cards have no further information than this. Since 1934 the names of the people interred in the plot have been written on the back of the cards. There is space to list the names and a small map for grave location with corresponding numbers to the list. The date of burial has been noted on the plot map on this card. History of Cricket Corner Cemetery Mr. Daniel F. Secomb mentioned the Cricket Corner Cemetery in his book, THE HISTORY OF AMHERST, HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, NEW HAMPSHIRE (Facsimile of the 1883 Edition. Sommersworth, NH: New Hampshire Publishing Company, 1972, page 442). "22 November, 1831. The town voted not to receive the land proposed to be given by Maj. Joseph Fletcher for a burying-ground. This lot lay on the old road south of land of Timothy Nichols, and it was stipulated in the offer that Maj. Fletcher and others should have liberty to build tombs therein, and that it should be fenced at the expense of the town. 14 March, 1832. Voted to purchase a piece of ground from one half to one acre in area, in the south-east part of the town, in School District #3, for a public burying-ground, and fence the same, and give those that wish so to do leave to build tombs therein." I would strongly recommend that researchers use the genealogical portion of Mr. Secomb's book in connection with the information recorded in this survey. Many relationships will be made clear when using the two together. Some graves from Cricket Corner Cemetery have been recorded in the book, COLONIAL GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS IN THE State OFNEW HAMPSHIRE by Mrs. Charles Carpenter Goss (Dover, NH: Historic Activities Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, 1942, p 15). This was not a complete survey. Directions from Amherst Village The cemetery is located in the southeast part of Amherst, between Corduroy and Boston Post Roads. Directions are from Amherst Village starting from the intersection of Main Street and Boston Post Roads in front of The Village Green Market. Take the Boston Post Road out of the village in the south-easterly direction. It will be exactly 2.5 miles to the cemetery from this intersection. At the stoplight, continue straight ahead. The road now becomes NH Highway 122, and is still called Boston Post Road. Turn left at the sign where Boston Post Rd turns off the highway, just before junction of Highway 122 & Highway 101. After the 101 underpass the road becomes Corduroy Road, and Boston Post Road takes a sharp turn to the left. Continue straight ahead on Corduroy Road. After passing the junction with Merrimack Hill Road on your right, watch for the cemetery on the left. It has a white fence and parking is by the side of the road. If you come to Souhegan High School you have gone too far. Size of Cemetery The cemetery has 71 plots. Some plots have no markers and though they appear to be empty they may indeed have unmarked graves. Most have from one to eight gravestones. The cemetery is roughly half an acre of land and is considered nearly full. Maintenance The Town of Amherst Road Department is in charge of sales, burials and maintenance. Broken stones are sent to a monument business in Milford. The expense is covered by the cemetery trust fund. The board of selectmen appoints three trustees to manage the trust fund for the cemetery through investments. They make the rules and regulations for the cemeteries and write the checks for cemetery maintenance and expenses. The plot number and plot owner's name correspond with the map of the cemetery at the Amherst Road Department. The index lists every surname, then first name, alphabetically with the plot number where they are located in the cemetery.
