Thomas Simpson Hall (1808-1870) was an Australian born pioneering cattleman who explored and built a massive cattle empire from 1825 until his death in 1870. He became famous for breeding fine beef poll Durham Shorthorn cattle on Nandowra station in the Upper Hunter Valley of the colony, and for breeding his famous Hall’s Heeler cattle dogs (forebears of the Blue Heelers and the Australian Cattle Dog.) He died 28 May 1870 at Calthorpe House, on Dartbrook, and was buried on the property in a small family cemetery located on the northern bank of Sandy Creek at GPS -32,157723, 150.854526 - this is approximately seven kilometers (4.3 miles) from Aberdeen township across the Hunter River. The cemetery is on dedicated ground and protected by a high cast-iron fence, it is surrounded by private farm property. To gain access to the site visitors should ask permission of the owners, or occupiers, of the property, the homestead is accessed from Dartbrook Road just before reaching Sandy Creek. The site is south east of the homestead about 530 meters and there may be locked gates requiring a key from the owners or occupiers of the property
