Established in 1841, St. Patrick Cemetery was established by St. Patrick Catholic Church. The need for a cemetery in the early 1840s was made clear because of the enormous Irish immigration during the Irish Famine. The cemetery’s construction happened just in time to allow for massive numbers of the Irish who succumbed to the yellow fever epidemic of 1853. St. Patrick No. 1 is the oldest and the largest of the three St. Patrick Cemeteries. The haphazard burials in this cemetery are mainly due to the enormous demand for huge numbers of burials needed in a very short space of time during the Yellow Fever Outbreaks. St. Patrick #1 is parallel to Cypress Grove Cemetery and features a large mausoleum at its central walkway. The family names in St. Patrick No. 1 are almost exclusively Irish, however there is increasing variation in Nos. 2 and 3, as Italian, French, and English names appear alongside Irish ones.
