Tokanui Hospital was opened in 1912 and closed in 1998 with the last burial taking place in about 1964. With the closure of the hospital it left no one with the overall responsible for the up keep of the cemetery. It is now in the middle of a working farm with stock being held on the cemetery enclosure/site. The area is fenced with concrete markers at each corner and a Memorial stone at the gate which reads "Tokanui Hospital Cemetery 1914-1964 to the 500 plus people buried here Rest in Peace" The Waipa District Council have a list of individual buried here but do not have this on their Cemetery data-base as they have no responsibility for the cemetery.
