Perl Creed Woodrum, 94, of Parsons died at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday June 30, 2009, at his home. He suffered from COPD for many years, but had only recently been in failing health.

He was born Jan. 15, 1915, near Stark City, Mo., to Albert LeRoy and Toney Mae (Hamilton) Woodrum. He attended school at Richie, Mo., and graduated from high school in 1933. After graduation, he joined the Civil Conservation Corp, a works program that provided jobs during the depression. He worked building bridges and other infrastructures in Idaho, Montana, California, Arkansas and Missouri.

While stationed near Bowling Green, Mo., he met and married Myrtle Guy Jett on July 3, 1939. After leaving the C.C.C., they lived in Bloomington, Ill., where he worked for the Funk Brothers Seed Co. In 1941, they moved back to Stark City so he could help on the family farm. In 1943, he came to Parsons to find work with the M-K-T Railroad but instead took the job of foreman for the Stephens Ranch located, at that time, almost eight miles southwest of Parsons. There he raised registered Herefords and traveled to places such as San Antonio, Dallas and Kansas City to show the prized bulls and cows in national livestock shows, winning many awards with them.

In 1948, the Stephens Ranch was moved two miles south of Parsons on 32nd Street, where he stayed on after the death of H.P. Stephens and until the operation was closed, at which time he retired.

In 1982, his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and he lovingly took care of her until her death on Aug. 10, 1987.

Following her death, he took up dancing and was a well known two-stepper at area dances, including Mound Valley, Altoona, Columbus, Independence and Parsons, attending several nights a week. His good friends Marvin and Lavon Blackburn always made sure Perl had a ride to the dances. He and his dancing partner, the late Wilma Wallingford, also spent many hours visiting friends in nursing homes and dancing to the delight of the residents.

Survivors include two sons, Clayton Woodrum and his wife, Pat, of Tulsa and James and his wife, Opal, of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Mary Ann DuVall of the home in Parsons; four grandchildren, Clayton Woodrum II of Tulsa, Michelle Kellogg of Cherryvale, Larry Woodrum of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Lisa Walker of Royse City, Texas; 11 great-grandchildren, Clayton Woodrum III and Taylor Woodrum of Tulsa, Jessica Yeoman of Parsons, Miranda and Nick Fosnight, Lane and Samantha Kellogg of Cherryvale, Terry Woodrum of Broken Arrow, Okla., Aaron and Carol DuVall of Fort Scott and Brayden Walker of Royse City, Texas; and five great-great-grandchildren, Alahna and Ashon Reece and Tae and Olivia Lee, all of Parsons, and Izaiha DuVall of Fort Scott.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kenny DuVall and Terry Woodrum; and all eight of his brothers and sisters.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be later at the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Newtonia, Mo.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association and may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
