This graveyard was originally one acre in size and part of the 99 acre John Kissam Farm, purchased in 1678. The farm extended from this site, west to the inlet. Approximately 50 members of the Kissam, Tredwell and related families were buried here from the late 17th through the early 19th centuries. Descendants of John Kissam, and early settler of Flushing, New York and of English origin, were prominent in the medical and legal professions in the 18th and 19th centuries on Long Island and in New York City. The long associated Kissam and Tredwell families were active in church and civic affairs on Long Island and played significant roles on both sides of the American Revolution.
