Beschreibung

KORWEINGUBOORA CEMETERY: Information identified to date: * Land of 5 acres, 1 rood, 8 perches was reserved as a cemetery on 5 March 1884. * It was gazetted on 7 March, 1884 [VGG 1884/694] * The cemetery was/is situated about 16 miles to the north of Ballan and about 200 yards to the west of the Ballan and Daylesford Road. * It is not known if there were any burials in the cemetery. Evidence from the file held at the Dept of Human Services Archives note that it was believed there were no burials in the cemetery. This information came from an inspection of the land in November, 1894. * No information has been located to date as to if any Trustees were appointed for the cemetery. * There were in 1894 about three houses within a quarter of a mile of the cemetery. * In May, 1947 the Victorian Lands Department enquired if the cemetery land could be sold. * In June, 1947 the Health Department noted there were no trustees for the cemetery and the records for the cemetery did not indicate if the cemetery had been used. The Shire of Ballan noted in June 1947 that it believed there were no burials in the cemetery. * In late June, 1947 the Health Department advised the Lands Department there was no objection to the land being sold. * The cemetery was then believed to be closed, but cannot be sure if this was gazetted. Believed that the land is still crown land and a listed as a cemetery. * Of interest is that a W.W.1 Soldier - Henry George ELVIS was born in Korweinguboora, enlisted September, 1914,served in the 11th Battalion as a Corporal and was Killed in Action: 22-25 July, 1916 at Pozieres, Somme, France. There is no known grave for him. His military records note that he was 30 years of age when he enlisted; his next of kin was gives as his mother, Mrs W Giles of Daylesford, Victoria and was noted as a Labourer from Daylesford and Single. * A search of the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages death records did not identify any burials noted as being buried in the "Korweinguboora Cemetery" but three deaths/burials were located from death certificates noting a death/burial at Korweinguboora. These "could have" been buried in the cemetery. But nothing to prove this has been found. The three are for: - LITTLE, Gertrude, 6 months. Died: 12 March 1888, Buried: 13 March, 1888. Child born to a single mother - Annie Little, Seamstress. - HARNETT, Bridget, Aged 66 years. Died: 3 April 1909; Buried: 5 April 1909. Parents: Martin Comford and Bridget McDonald. Married to Patrick Harnett in 1884; 9 children. Born: Tipperary, Ireland. - BAKER, Mary, Aged 75 years. Died: 6 October 1914; Buried: 9 October 1914. Parents: Michael Fenelon and Anastasia Keogh. Married: Charles Baker, 5 children. Born: Ireland. * A check of the nearest cemetery, Eganstown (Blanket Flat) Cemetery did not list the three above being buried there. A search of the death records noted that most people who died at Korweinguboora were buried at Eganstown (Blanket Flat) Cemetery. Eganstown Cemetery was originally known as Blanket Flat. * The best available information to date notes that the cemetery was not sold and the land is still there, covered by bush. * In 1906 a severe bushfire burnt down the Roman Catholic Church, the School and several homes in the Korweinguboora area.
